The compound was developed in the 1980s at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow, where it emerged from research on short ACTH fragments and their effects on the central nervous system. Russian pharmaceutical listings describe it as a nootropic and neuroprotective agent, most often formulated as nasal drops. It is not a marketed medicine in the United States or the European Union, and no pharmacopoeial monograph covers it. Consequently, most published clinical experience with the substance originates from a small number of research centres, mainly in Russia and neighbouring countries.
Pharmacological accounts link semax to melanocortin signalling and to modulation of neurotrophic factor expression, particularly brain-derived neurotrophic factor and nerve growth factor. Much of this evidence comes from rodent studies using intranasal delivery, a route chosen because it allows peptides to reach the central nervous system with limited systemic exposure. Whether the same mechanisms operate in humans at comparable magnitude remains an open question. The precise receptor or receptors responsible for the reported behavioural and neuroprotective effects have not been conclusively identified.
Clinical reports describe use in ischaemic stroke, transient ischaemic attack, optic nerve conditions, and cognitive complaints, but most of these studies are small and were conducted in a single region. Systematic reviews have generally described the evidence base as limited in size and variable in methodological quality. Randomised controlled data suitable for international regulatory assessment are scarce. As a result, major treatment guidelines outside Russia do not include the peptide, and interest in it remains largely research-driven rather than routine clinical.

== Environmental behavior == Simple substituted pyridines vary significantly in environmental fate characteristics, such as volatility, adsorption, and biodegradation. Dipicolinic acid is among the least volatile, least adsorbed by soil, and most rapidly degraded of the simple pyridines. A number of studies have confirmed dipicolinic acid is biodegradable in aerobic and anaerobic environments, which is consistent with the widespread occurrence of the compound in nature. With a high solubility (5g/liter) and limited sorption (estimated Koc = 1.86), utilization of dipicolinic acid as a growth substrate by microorganisms is not limited by bioavailability in nature.
So these glands lubricate not only the part of the hair that is just growing at 0.3 mm per day on the skin surface, but also the more mature hair growth, providing it with a protective layer of fat. FAEEs (nanogram = one billionth of a gram) appear in hair in almost one order of magnitude lower than (the relevant order of magnitude of) EtG (picogram = one trillionth of a gram). It has been technically possible to measure FAEEs since 1993, and the first study reporting the detection of EtG in hair was done by Sachs in 1993. In practice, most hair which is sent for analysis has been cosmetically treated in some way (bleached, permed etc.). It has been proven that FAEEs are not significantly affected by such treatments (Hartwig et al., 2003a). FAEE concentrations in hair from other body sites can be interpreted in a similar fashion as scalp hair (Hartwig et al., 2003b).
This is combined with exposure control to tailor the effect to represent the human eye. For example, as the player exits a dark area into a light area, the new area is initially glaringly bright, but quickly darkens, representing the adjustment of the player character's eyes to the light. New cube mapping techniques allow the reflection cast by an object to correspond with the brightness of the light source, and lightmaps enable light bouncing and global illumination to be taken into account in the rendering. Refraction effects were added to make light account for the physical attributes of an object and to emulate the way light is reflected by water. The Lost Coast level is specifically designed to showcase these effects. It uses the sea and beach as opportunities to demonstrate water-based effects, the monastery to demonstrate bloom from its whitewash walls, and the sanctuary to provide the means to show refraction through stained glass windows and cube maps on golden urns and candlesticks. As a technology showcase, Valve considered Lost Coast to have very demanding system requirements. The game runs on computers with specifications lower than what is recommended, albeit without some key features such as high dynamic range. If a non-high-dynamic-range-capable card is used, the developer commentary is changed slightly to reflect this. For example, Valve president Gabe Newell would describe the effects that are seen differently.

Later during the war, Kitchener attempted to form a Boer Police Force, as part of his efforts to pacify the occupied areas and effect a reconciliation with the Boer community. The members of this force were despised as traitors by the Boers still in the field. Boers who attempted to remain neutral after giving their parole to British forces were derided as "hensoppers" (hands-uppers) and often coerced into giving support to the Boer guerrillas (which was one reason for British scorched earth campaigns throughout the countryside and detention of Boers in concentration camps, to deny anything of use to the guerrillas). Like the Canadian, and particularly the Australian and New Zealand contingents, many volunteer units formed by South Africans were "light horse" or mounted infantry, well-suited to the countryside and manner of warfare. Some regular British officers scorned their comparative lack of formal discipline, but the light horse units were hardier and more suited to campaigning than the overloaded British cavalry, who were still obsessed with the charge by lance or sabre. At their peak, 24,000 South Africans served in the field in "colonial" units. Notable units (in addition to the Imperial Light Horse) were the South African Light Horse, Rimington's Guides, Kitchener's Horse and the Imperial Light Infantry.
== Production process == Single-cell proteins develop when microbes ferment waste materials (including wood, straw, cannery and food-processing wastes, residues from alcohol production, hydrocarbons, or human and animal excreta). With 'electric food' processes the inputs are electricity, CO2 and trace minerals and chemicals such as fertiliser. It is also possible to derive SCP from natural gas to use as a resilient food. Similarly SCP can be derived from waste plastic by upcycling. The problem with extracting single-cell proteins from waste products is the dilution and cost. They are found in very low concentrations, usually less than 5%. Engineers have developed ways to increase the concentrations including centrifugation, flotation, precipitation, coagulation, and filtration, or the use of semi-permeable membranes. The single-cell protein must be dehydrated to approximately 10% moisture content and/or acidified to aid in storage and prevent spoilage. The methods to increase the concentrations to adequate levels and the de-watering process require equipment that is expensive and not always suitable for small-scale operations. It is economically prudent to feed the product locally and soon after it is produced.
== Research == Due to its high biocompatibility, bioactivity, osteoconductive and/or osteoinductive capacity, nontoxicity, nonimmunogenic properties, and noninflammatory behavior, hydroxyapatite is available and used as a bone filler and as coatings on prostheses. Designing bone scaffolds with a higher capability of promoting bone regeneration is a topical research subject. Composite 3D scaffolds for bone tissue engineering based on nano-hydroxyapatite and poly-ε-caprolactone were designed. The 3D composite scaffolds showed good cytocompatibility and osteogenic potential, which is specifically recommended in applications when faster mineralization is needed, such as osteoporosis treatment.

Epidemiologists and public health officials use these models for several critical purposes: analyzing disease transmission dynamics, projecting the total number of infections and recoveries over time, estimating key epidemiological parameters such as the basic reproduction number (R0) or effective reproduction number (Rt), evaluating potential impacts of different public health interventions before implementation, and informing evidence-based policy decisions during disease outbreaks. Beyond infectious disease modeling, the approach has been adapted for applications in population ecology, pharmacokinetics, chemical kinetics, and other fields requiring the study of transitions between defined states. For such investigations and to consult decision makers, often more complex models are used.

== X == X-chromosome inactivation A process in female mammals where one of the two X chromosomes is randomly silenced in each cell to balance gene dosage with males. Some neurological disorders, such as Rett syndrome, are influenced by X-inactivation patterns. X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy A genetic disorder affecting the breakdown of very-long-chain fatty acids, leading to their accumulation in the brain and adrenal glands. It causes progressive demyelination and adrenal insufficiency. X-linked intellectual disability A group of inherited cognitive disorders associated with mutations on the X chromosome. Examples include Fragile X syndrome and MECP2 duplication syndrome. Xenon (anesthetic) A noble gas with neuroprotective and anesthetic properties. It has been studied for its NMDA receptor antagonism and minimal side effects on brain function. Xenotransplantation The transplantation of cells or tissues from one species to another for research or therapeutic purposes. In neuroscience, fetal pig or rat neural cells may be studied in primate models to investigate brain repair. Xerostomia A condition of dry mouth that may result from neurological disorders affecting autonomic control of salivary glands, such as Parkinson's disease or side effects of anticholinergic drugs.

It is described as a synthetic analogue of the ACTH(4–10) fragment, a short segment of adrenocorticotropic hormone. Its sequence differs from that fragment and includes two proline residues, which influence stability and behaviour in solution.
It appears in Russian pharmaceutical listings as a nasal formulation, but it is not an authorised medicine in the United States or the European Union. Outside those markets it is normally encountered as a research chemical rather than a prescription product.
Laboratory and animal work points to melanocortin signalling and changes in neurotrophic factor levels, especially brain-derived neurotrophic factor. The exact receptor targets and the degree to which these findings transfer to humans are still unresolved.
